Playing Hooky!

I love going to the movies. Especially matinees. There’s just something about sitting in a nearly empty theatre, munching on popcorn, while everyone else is at work or school that makes me feel like I’m living the good life. Which also makes me wonder why I don’t do it more than my usual once or twice a year??

But yesterday I decided to go for it, so I grabbed my husband, and headed for the theatre, where we hunkered down with six other hooky players and watched, “Lars and the Real Girl,” and it did not disappoint.

If you haven’t seen and/or heard of this movie yet, here’s the one sentence plot outline from IMDB:

"A delusional young guy strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet."

Which may have you thinking: What???

But with an amazing script by Nancy Oliver, superb acting by the entire cast, and great directing as well, this story about a shy, isolated, young man in love with a doll that he thinks is real, is both heartbreaking and hilarious, and the way the town rallies around him, welcoming “Bianca” into the community in a bid to support Lars, is so sweet and inspiring it made me want to move there.

If you get the chance, go see this movie. If not, rent it. Though I’m warning you—the popcorn won’t be near as good!

What about you—what are some good movies you’ve seen this year??

I love going to the movies during the day....we have a small cinema where we live and often I'll pop down on my own late morning or early afternoon. I know what you mean about feeling like you're playing hooky.

Good movies this year.... Harry Potter, Becoming Jane, Beatrix Potter, Hot Fuzz, Starter for Ten, Dream Girls...

Hey Sara-
There's nothing like popcorn for breakfast!! Becoming Jane was on my must see list, now it's on my Netflix list!

My DH got off work early the other day so we got a babysitter and saw a 4:00 showing of Dan in Real Life. We didn't know anything about it, but we sat in that empty theater and laughed our heads off.

Though I have to admit, going to a full movie is a lot of fun, you know, taking in everybody else's reactions. I remember watching Shrek with my kids and when the Ugly Stepsister the Bartender scene came up, my then 3 year-old son said (rather loudly), "Why is that lady really a man?" You should have heard all the snickers around us!

Hey Wendy-
Oh, I LOVE Steve Carrell so that movie is def on my list!

Little kids at the movies are always entertaining-- they don't edit!

Congrats on getting your hands on your book!

Thanks Alyson! Yes, if you love Steve, you'll like this movie. It's not exactly romantic but it's laugh-out-loud funny. Actually, the bookstore scene is pretty romantic, now that I think about it.

I love watching TV or movies with my kids. The way they interpret things is hilarious and so fun. :)
