Loving the Bad Boy

Hi! Thanks for visiting us at the Teen Fiction Cafe. I'm Liza Conrad--my pen name for teen fiction. And in my so-called real life, I'm Erica Orloff, and I write fiction for adults. Beyond that, I'm insane enough to have four kids and three dogs, leaving me seriously outnumbered. I write in my pjs, and try to keep up with my crazy life.

When I sat down to blog this morning, I realized that all three of my teen books, Rock My World, High School Bites, and The Poker Diaries, have bad boys in them. Considering my first husband was a bad boy (and I won't go into how brief THAT marriage was!), there's something to that bad boy appeal.

When I was in high school--and on through a lot of my relationships--there was something about me, looking across a crowded room, seeing a guy who looked like trouble, and . . . love at first sight. They were the guys with earrings and shaved heads, tattoos and a lot of times enough emotional baggage to fill a football stadium. But I loved them.

Now I just write about them. In High School Bites, I took the bad boy to a new level--he's a bad boy vampire. Blood-sucking undead . . . the new punk.

But in thinking about it, I decided that the reason I loved bad boys wasn't so much that I loved them, as I loved the idea of taming them. That somehow my love for them would be so intense, so strong, that I could magically fix them.
I've learned a lot over the years and the bad boys I left in the wake. Most especially that you really can't fix anyone. They have to fix themselves.

How about you? Have you ever loved the bad boy? Or do you run the other way?

Oh, yeah. I'm all about the bad boy. One of my first crushes was the only guy in my jr. high with a mohawk. Then I went on to the long-haired, pierced and/or tattooed boys with surly, tough-guy attitudes.

Even more than wanting to "fix" or "tame" them, I think I just liked the attention I got being with a "bad boy." I loved it when people would say, "What's SHE doing with HIM?" I think it made me appear mysterious and intriguing, which is a lot more fun than being just a "good girl."

In college I went through my "jock" phase, and that's when I fell head over heels for my husband -- a long-haired, pierced tennis player. Haha!

I've been drawn to the bad boy plenty in high school. And learned some lessons. haha! Now I always run the other way. =D

I was drawn to bad boys until I realized it's OK to love and be loved by someone who makes me feel good about myself. Of course, in books/TV/film, I still love bad boys, like Chance Wood in my own Vertigo or Riggins on Friday Night Lights.

I hadn't thought about that aspect, but definitely. I am also the daughter of a really, really bad boy, so maybe it's just part of me.

Yeah ... I definitely don't need the drama anymore. But still like them in film and books, too.

Been there.. done that....One of the first boys I was serious about, at age 17, was bad (but kind and cute). He came from a bad family too. I guess it was because they were so different from my own family. It was sad because he died really young - aged 19 (I wasn't going with him then).

I almost always met guys from bad families too, who somehow seemed to have something redeemable about them. That was what kept me hanging on sometimes. Compassion mixed with lust.

Hmmm, I was always a sucker for the tortured artist type. . . never really went for the bad boys!

I'm so glad I grew out of falling for bad guys! I think all girls secretly pine for the ones they know will treat them like crap!
Erica~You're my idol, how in the world do you keep up? :)

It's all an illusion. I never keep up and am always swimming upstream. And for the record, this new baby--#4--is going to be the one to kill me. That and daughter #2 taking up the drums. Son #1 taking up electric guitar. It's noisy. I feel a breakdown coming on. LOL

In high school I was kind of the little mother to the bad boys. lol I'd kind of scold them for things and they loved me for it. Generally romantically I kept a little away from them, though. This was a way for me to flirt and play with them without getting burned. ;)

Sounds like we've all been there, done that! But I think maybe we learned what good guys were from being with the bad ones. Kinda like how you don't know what happiness is till you've suffered a little...) Food for thought!

There's a certain excitement about "bad boys" that the predictable "good boys" can't duplicate. (Yes, I'm happily married, but I still like to have crushes on characters in books and film and I find that I'm still attracted to the same type of guy as when I was dating.)

I like the type that doesn't conform. Maybe a little rough around the edges. A little scruffy. But for all the bad boy exterior, I want a guy who has a gentle heart and a romantic touch.

I loved Jess in Gilmore Girls, was taken with Rob in Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-are-You, and completely fell for Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

Out of curiosity, who are your favorite bad boys?

The bad boys just seemed cuter--no, HOTTER!! And more mysterious. And for some reason, I always felt cooler and more mysterious when I was with them. But they were never into commitment. All my "bad boy" relationships lasted about a week.
But now: my fiance is a nerdy English physicist, so clearly I decided to run the other way in the long run!

I must be getting older because now I like nerdy physicists and other brain-types. :-)
