Escalator Encounters

He was just a guy she saw on an escalator in a crowded train station. He was going down, she was going up. They never said a word but their eyes met. For that brief moment in time, the rest of the world faded away, and all that was left was the promise of what could be followed closely by the disappointment in realizing that it never would.

For weeks she thought about him, long after she had forgotten what he looked like. She imagined what it may have been like if they had been able to stop the escalators and actually meet. She should have written down her phone number to flash at him. He should have run after her train.

Eventually, the daydreams faded. But for years afterward, every time she struggled with a tough relationship or broke up with a boyfriend, she thought of that day in the train station, and the longing for romance returned.

Have you ever had an escalator encounter? A chance meeting that will never lead to anything but the idea that something could have happened?

Better yet, have you ever had a serendipitous moment like this that has actually led to a long-term relationship?

The romantic in me wants to know!

Oh, great post!

I married husband number 1--one of those look across a crowded room guys--spur of the moment after knowing him three short months. Didn't last--but was still a meet-cute escalator-type encounter. My current husband I met by throwing a steak at him in a crowded restaurant kitchen when he (the chef) burned my best customer's steak. Sort of an escalator moment. After that we locked eyes and . . . been together ever since.

And I have had a bunch of escalator moments in life . . . and like you, the romantic in me thinks of them from time to time.

I once saw a guy ascend the mall escalator in a Zorro costume. It became the catalyst for an entire novel called Z. Great post!

What a great post!
The love story in my first novel, Back Talk, sort of fits into the "escalator criteria." I love romantic stories like that...

I spotted my husband across a crowded bar and the moment our eyes met I KNEW. We've been together ever since, and our 6 year anniversary is Thursday!

Erica - I love it... how many people can say they threw a fish at their significant other? :)

Lauren - I would definitely want to read Z. Sounds like my kind of story. What's the status of that book???

Alex - less than two months and I can check out Backtalk and your escalatoresque romance!

Alyson - HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! (soon)

Gerb, it's been on submission for a while now but so far no one has bitten. I honestly don't understand that since it's the best thing I've ever written. Ah, well!

Lauren,

This is a weird business, huh? Gambatte! (Hang in there.) It'll get snatched up as soon as it gets in front of the right person. And then let me know, because I will definitely want a copy when it comes out.
