Friend Movies

Hi all! My very first Teen Fiction Café blog and what a great topic!

It’s hard for me to sit down and watch an entire movie. Not because I’m the hyper type, but because there are so often other things I would rather be doing, like surfing the net, writing or checking my email. But I have noticed the kind of movies I will sit still for generally fall into two categories: the romantic comedy and the friend movie.

The romantic comedy is a given. I love humorous romances. I read them, write them and watch them. The friend movie is harder to figure out as I’m rather a solitary sort. I’d rather have two or three best friends than a group of friends. (Which is pretty pathetic when I want to go out for coffee with someone and none of my few friends are available.) So why do I like movies that feature groups of friends? Color me clueless.

“St. Elmo’s Fire” is a friend movie I watched a gazillion time as a young adult. (I mean, hello! Have you seen the teenage Rob Lowe? And Andrew McCarthy as the intense misunderstood writer type? Yum.) It’s not particularly well acted, but it is funny, and the script is stellar. (Okay, there are plot holes you could drive a truck through, but the dialogue is hysterical) We still quote this line from the movie: “There is the brink of insanity and then there is the abyss…”

I love the whole concept of having a group of friends that will stick with you through thick and thin. Another great friend movie is “The Big Chill.” That one is well acted and the music is great. Old, but great. The script is full of gems, but they’re better in context.

My dh and I both love those kinds of movies, though neither of us has ever had that kind of close knit group of friends. Well, maybe a couple of times, but the groups never lasted. Some people moved away, while others found new interests and drifted off. Maybe after our kids are gone, we’ll get into a group like that. But not right now. Friendships take time, effort and energy and all three of those things seem to be in seriously short supply right now.

And yes, I think it’s pretty pathetic that the best friend movies I know about are like twenty years old!

What kind of friend movies do you like? And do you have a close knit group of friends worthy of a movie?

Welcome to TFC, Teri! I agree that romantic comedies and friend movies are good bets. Family movies (think "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Vacation") are really fun to watch, too.

I like quirky flicks, like Rushmore, because I have a lot of quirky people in my life. And I have some really close pals--but not so much a circle because we're all spread out, and I have friends from different times of my life. I have friends who party hard and are still a riot to go out with, and then friends who I can do the movies and pjs on the couch thing, and friends for wine and "deep" discussions.

I'm going to echo what Erica said--though I'll use different words so it looks original!
I don't hang with a group--never really have. I have what I call friend "clusters"- different friends I share different things in common with-- and since I've moved a lot- they're pretty much all over the place!
And, like Erica, I really like quirky movies (and recently watched Rushmore for the millionth time in an Alaskan hotel room!), though I must say I LOVED the Big Chill- and used to watch the TV show Friends!
Welcome to the cafe Teri!

I have to say, one of the best friend movies (or series of movies) out there is "Shrek." Yes, it's animated, but the characters are so well (pun alert!) drawn, that you forget that. The scripts are wonderful, sharp and real, and the visuals are hysterical (not the animation itself, but the "one-liners" that are really images, if that makes sense -- not gags exactly, more tasteful and erudite than that :?)).

As you know, with my kids as young as they are, I don't go to a lot of movies anymore. DH and I tend to alternate (obscure art films or sci-fi/horror for him, and romantic comedies/romances with women in long dresses riding horses for me ;?)). So I'll mention one last "old" film: "The Breakfast Club." It starts out as the anti-friend movie, but as we all know, shifts subtly until by the end, even if they go their separate ways, we know the characters will remain connected for the rest of their lives. Very powerful, IMO.

And -- who was too busy for coffee today, hmm? HMMM? NOT me, oh, no. *I* wasn't the one who had to take my son to school. (Well, okay, I had to take my son to school, but I was *done* with that and ready for coffee and -- sniff! -- no one was free. ;?))

Hey, Teri! Great to see you here. I'm like Erica and Alyson. I have different clusters of friends. And what I've found in the past is if I introduce some of them to each other, they don't particularly get on. Weird!! How can I like them all but they don't like each other.

I love Rom Coms. I can't think of any friends movies which are in my favourites. I love the series Friends. It still makes me laugh, even though I've see each eposide about a hundred times!!!
