The King and I

This week's topic is about music so I thought I'd talk about Elvis.

I love Elvis - not in a 'travel to Gracelands and burst into tears' sort of way, just in an 'everytime I listen to him sing I get sad that he died' way. Anyway, I have a lot of songs I listen to when I write, but every now and then I get an overwhelming desire for something specific - the urge is a bit like when I was pregnant and was compelled to eat breakfast cereal all day long. I have no idea why the craving was there, but it could not be denied or controlled (as my husband quickly discovered).

And so it was when I started writing my zombie book. Whenever I opened up the file I just wanted to listen to Elvis. So much so that in the end he managed to hip thrust his way into the story and I can honestly say it was one of the funniest scenes I've ever written (of course I'm not saying anyone else will laugh at it, but it amused me no end and still does).

Right now I'm going through a major Bowie phase and no doubt he'll manage to Ziggy Stardust his way in somewhere as well!! Has this ever happened to anyone else where a specific artist or song has suddenly hijacked your life like this?

YES! The most recent was Michael Buble's "Lost." I don't know why but just before Christmas I was listening to it a hundred times a day....

Oh, I get song obsessed all the time! I listened to Cat Stevens's "Wind" today a gazillion times because I recently watched ALMOST FAMOUS again (for the gazillionth time!).

Oh, and I DID go to Graceland! It was FABULOUS!

And, I'm a HUGE Bowie fan from way, way back!

Can't wait to read your "Elvis and Zombies" scene!

Yes well, I recently blogged about getting a song stuck in my head. It was over Christmas and I was visiting my 80-year old step-father and the song that would not leave me (and threatened to leave my head, past my vocal chords and through my mouth) was "I Touch Myself". You know, I kind of blame you for that - but in a non-malicious kind of way. ;-)

Leigh - phew I'm so pleased it's not just me!!

Alyson - okay, so I do secretly want to go to Gracelands but if I ran into a fan who asked me to give all the Elvis songs in chronological order, I'd be in trouble!!

Lucy - ack - though in my defence I only put in on my playlist because Trent mentioned it on pink is the new blog - so let's blame him (btw, I used to see them perform live quite a lot and they were amazing!!)

Erica - oooh, I might have to check it out (hehehe - always room for one more obsession, that's what I say!)

You know I had to come see your Elvis post!

You really should go to Graceland. I haven't been there since the late 70s so I've never been inside, but it's way high up on my list of stuff to do when I get back to the States.

Cheers for E!

Oh, La. I've loved Bowie ever since I saw the movie Labrynth. Probably before, but I couldn't get enough of him after that. I do get artist obsessed. It comes in phases depending on my mood and what I'm working on. During one book I listened to The Highwayman by Loreena McKennit about a thousand times. Other artists I've been obsessed with have ranged from Daughtry to Santana to Zeppelin to Seal. Today I'll probably start with Bowie...

December - hehe - so glad I lured you over!!! I would love to get to Gracelands. I'm doing my first trip to the US this year but it's only short. HOwever, next time...

Gerb - hehehe, glad I put you in a Bowie mood. I loved him in Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence. So sad. I remember blubbering all through it!

Bev - omg how great was he in Extras. I saw him in concert when I was about 15 and that's what actually got me into him. He's so great!

Sara - finally - music we agree on!!!!!!
