Okay, I admit, I was definitely one of those teens who stood in line to take in the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (more than once).
Partly because, well, seeing a movie at midnight just felt really cool-- and subversive-- and edgy, which are pretty much all the things I wanted to be (at the time!).
And partly because Tim Curry vamping it up in a garter belt was just too good to pass up!
And while I didn't dress up or bring my own props, I did memorize all of the lyrics to all of the songs and would freely belt them out with the best of them.
And so, when I recently read that MTV was planning a remake, that they hope to be ready by next Halloween-- I felt, well, ambivalent.
I mean, does one of the greatest cult classics ever really need a do-over??
I don't know, what do YOU think?

A...a...a...REMAKE?????
AAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!
So, what, we'll have Rihanna and one of the Jonas Brothers as Brad and Janet??????
And P Diddy will be Frank-N-Furter??? Or let's just go all the way and have Madonna, shall we???
At least we can have Meat Loaf played by Meat Loaf -- again!!!
Some ideas are just too, too stupid...
Cara
I've never seen TRHPS.
I don't know.. I've never seen a re-make that I thought was better then the first. It seems like lately there are a ton of remakes hitting the screens. :)
Hey Cara- Yup, ditto. That's pretty much what I thought when I read it! I mean, why mess with perfection???
Keri- I know. I'm trying to think of a remake that was worth it . . .nope, none that I can think of!
The original is brilliant--just restore it to its glory and blast it everywhere! I still remember my first time...
Hehehe - well Alyson I might've accidently stolen your Valley Girl post but I never doubted you would blog about an equally brilliant movie! I loved Rocky Horror and still remember dressing up with 5 of my friends to do the time warp in front of all of grade eight. Less said the better!
Though eek on the remake, I just can't imagine anyone doing it as well (we certainly couldn't!!!!!)
Melissa- Yup, agreed.
Amanda- Ha! Love it! Which one were you????
Though I'm of the unpopular persuasion, I'd love to see a remake. I have no idea if it'll be decent, but what if it is? We can always watch the original.
Hey Wendy- Aw, now there's some positive thinking! :-D
NOOOOOOO! That sounds horrible. Please tell me who could pull that off, NO ONE! I remember the first time i saw it (on tv) I remember asking my mom if it was sort of "classic" or something, lol. I love that movie!
Hey Alea- I KNOW! I shudder to think who will try to play Tim Curry's role . . .
I'm not interested. I like it as is, complete with Tim Curry's fabulous legs.
They still show it fairly frequently at midnight where I am. Often accompanied by a live performance, even.
Liviania- Yup, it's all about those legs, lips, and the attitude! Oh, and a live performance?? That sounds awesome!
Not convinced about this.... but I'm going in with an open mind.....
Sara- good for you! Sunny side up all the way! I myself, have great trepidation . . .
As I recall we thought we would be very cutting edge and go unisex. There might've been tuxedo shirts and black leggings involved. See, this is why I prefer to keep my memories buried!!!!!
Amanda- You really MUST bring pictures of this to SF-- I'm very intrigued . . .
I'm in the nooooo! camp. Why remake a classic? Is there something that needs to be improved upon? No. (But I'm sure there's a buck to be made.)
Linda, with her frankfurters, newspaper and squirt bottle reserved for the original.
Gerb- Ah, yes, the squirt bottle! Glad you're keeping yours handy!
