This week's TFC topic is friends and boyfriends, and I have a question for everyone: WHAT is it like to be dating/have a crush on someone in the age of Facebook? Seriously, I can't fathom it. I met my husband in 2002, so we never really had to deal with the "in a relationship" status change or a social networking public breakup.
The other aspect of this is: Uh, stalking. It's an extreme word, but you know what I mean: Watching some other girl write on the guy you like's wall, tracking photos of a party you weren't invited to, just generally seeing angst roll by in the form of public posts all day long... I think I would have gone crazy as a teenager.
I'll admit it: I still look up people I used to have crushes on, just to see their photos and updates and make sure they're happy and--okay, yes--to check out the girls they DID end up with. Anyone else?
Love and Facebook, man. It's complicated.

I follow a three simple rules.
1. I don't put my dating status on facebook. The day I update my relationship status will be somewhere between my wedding and first anniversary.
2. If I friend a guy I know is in a relationship, his significant other needs to already be my friend. I only bend this rule for guys I've known since I was ten and have never met their significant other.
3. I ALWAYS check up on girls they ended up with. Even though our relationship didn't work out, I still want to see them happy.
Good rules, Kathryn!
Ohhhhh fb can be harsh. Knew friends had split for real when their status changed from 'married' to 'single'.
I have to admit to some nosiness on old flames too....
Beck--so glad to hear it's normal. You guys are making me feel better!
I admit to checking people out and feeling glad that I still have hair while the guys have lost theirs. I'm a small, small person.
i'm actually terrified when I saw my ex added me as friend. I blocked him in seeing my fb acctually. hahaha.
Yeah I cannot imagine going through all my teenage angst in the fb era. It would be awful. However I did actually meet my husband on MySpace. Before I started get a bunch of spam messages from guys offering to show me errr lewd photos, there was this nice guy who messaged me about music and told me he'd just moved to town and we chatted a bit about politics and other stuff before I invited him to come into my bar while I was working so I could safely scope him out. And we lived happily ever after. SO I do have to thank social networking for that!
