School....... the best days of our lives????

Hey, guys! I'm Sara Hantz and my first book 'The Second Virginity of Suzy Green' is being published by Flux in September 2007. I live in New Zealand so if you want to ask me anything about this awesome country, please do so.

How many of you have been told, enjoy school it's the best time of your life? I know I was told it repeatedly. But, I didn't get it. How could it be? I was always in trouble for disrupting lessons, dying my hair non-regulation colours (well, as school shirts were blue, I fail to see how having a blue flash at the front of my hair was a problem - it matched), having a small radio in my purse and balancing it on my shoulder so I could listen to it.... the list goes on and on.

I couldn't wait to leave. But once I did, school took on a whole new meaning. I thought going out to work meant no one would be telling me what to do every hour of the day (like in school). Wrong! At school, unless you do something really bad, they can't kick you out for underperforming, unlike work. And school hours being 9-4, with two breaks and an hour and a quarter for lunch, is pretty good when compared with working 8-6 or however long it takes to get the job done. And as for the long school holidays. Try swapping that for 3 weeks a year.

And lets not forget what they actually teach you at school. I might not have valued it then, but I sure do now. Education gives you choices. So when you come to decide what career you want you're not restricted.

So, best days of my life? Not the best but, with hindsight, better than I thought. And my BFF I have known since school.

What about you, how do you feel about school?

When I left high school, I promised myself I would never become one of those nostalgic people that look back and say "Wow, those were the best days of my life." Because really, they weren't.
I hated everything about school, from the fact that conformity was the highest virtue, that only performing to standard (both over- and underachievers had problems), that our textbooks were 15+ years old... Never mind the cliquiness and cattiness of the girls, the mind games and physical abuse of the boys, the racism, pervert teachers...
Best days of my life. The best day of my high school life was the day after I knew I never had to go back.

Kiki, you're so right about conforming being the highest virtue. I have two children - one who conforms and one who doesn't.... guess who gets on best at school!

The thing that really sticks in my mind about high school is cornering my boyfriend's younger sister outside her classroom so I could pump her for info on her brother. She later became my sister in law, and swears I used to haunt the halls and stalk her (she has a very selective memory if you ask me!)

Christina, it's so cool that you've known your husband since school. So, I guess school days were special for you.

I couldn't wait to get out of school! I even started junior college, then planned on transfering to a U, but I was too impatient to live my life and dropped out. Sometimes I think things would have been easier if I went to a U, but things have worked out just the way they are supposed to!

Sara, you had a blue streak in your hair? You totally rule!

I hated school, but it's all good, 'cuz now I have all this angsty stuff to write about!

Well, I get the whole 'best days of your life' concept. I look at the kids at our international school and the cool experiences they are having and the energy and ambition and optimism they have and I think, yeah, this has got to be the greatest time of their lives!

But then I look back at my own HS experience and... not so much. I mean, I didn't hate it. I was involved in clubs and committees and performed with the drill/dance team and all that, but my days weren't filled with endless ecstasy or anything. And by senior year, I was so OVER HS it wasn't funny. Most of my friends were older than me and had already graduated and I would rather hang out with them at the college dances and activities than do anything with the HS crowd.

Yeah, I hope HS (or college for that matter) for everyone is great, but honestly, there's an entire life waiting for us when it's over. We don't want to stop having adventures after school ends, but keep collecting 'best days' throughout our lives!

I have a line in "Faking 19" where my character reflects on high school and says, "If what they say is true, if these truly are the best years of my life, then I'm totally screwed."
And that is exactly how I felt about it, though I'm happy to say life improved a great deal the day after graduation!

Alyson, that is a fab line. I love it.

Bev, yes a blue streak and I got in a lot of trouble for it...

Kelly, I'm a believer in what will be will be.

Gerb, what you say is so true. And I think other people look on and believe kids are having the best time of their lives, but maybe the kids don't experience it like that.

Hmm. I basically liked high school. But for none of the academic reasons. We had a 10 minute break between classes--that was my favorite time! I liked chillin' with my friends.
My high school was big, and if you wanted to survive, you had to be strong and outgoing. It helped me gain oodles of self-confidence!
Thanks Santa Fe High School!

ps-I'm gagging to go to New Zealand. SO jealous of you. :)

1974-5, when I was 12 and in 8th grade, was a good year; the rest, not so much. But I'm a firm believer in a good education and I tell my seven-year-old daughter and her friends that their best chance of taking over the world is by being smart; they seem to get it.

I really enjoyed hs. Would I say it was the best time of my life? God, I hope not b/c that would be pretty sad. But I do sometimes long for the time of no responsiblities (mortgage, power bill, crying babies, etc) just for a second then I remember all the horrible boyfriends I had! :)

I actually liked school, all but Jr. High. But I can honestly say I think RIGHT NOW (well, when I don't have a cold) is the best time of my life. :)

I'm really glad nobody ever told me high school was going to be the best time of my life! In fact, people mostly told me "just get through high school, and then college is awesome" (which I found to be mostly true). High school had some great times, but it also had some tough ones, too, and college for me just rocked a million times more.
