Since it’s anything goes week here at the café, I thought I’d write about a little phenomenon you might have heard of called TWILIGHT (the movie). And while I won’t get into a Team Edward vs. Team Jacob debate—I think we’ve all had enough of divisive politics for a while—I do want to talk about the amazing fact that according to Fandango, over 100 show times are already sold out across the nation—and we’re still a week away from the premiere!
And while I haven’t read past NEW MOON (yet!), I’m definitely planning to see the movie—at midnight—on Thursday—and yes, I preordered my tickets from Fandango too—or rather Jessica Brody pre-ordered them as she’s far more organized and industrious than me—but I digress!
And in case you were wondering (you probably weren't, but still) I don’t consider myself a rabid fan. I mean, I really really liked the book, and by the end I was even more than a little annoyed with my husband for not being a vampire like Edward—because how cool would that be? But still, I’m not as obsessed as some people I know (you know who you are!). So I guess that’s why I don’t have these huge expectations other than to be entertained.
Oh, and for Edward to be insanely hot!
But really, that’s it. And with Catherine Hardwicke at the helm, I’m pretty confident I’ll get what I want. But other than that, I honestly don’t care if it’s not just like the book, or if they take major liberties, or leave stuff out, or whatever. I’m just there for the camaraderie, the popcorn, and the good time.
Okay, and maybe I'm hoping for lots of Edward close ups--but that's it-- I swear!
What about you? Do you have major expectations? Will you be disappointed if it’s not true to the book?

I'm this close to being a rabid fan, lol. The bits of the movie I've seen look fantastic, but I'm actually glad (from what I've heard) that some of the dialogue was changed. Some of the Twilight lines would sound wrong on screen, but read beautifully on the page.
Alyson, dear Alyson, you must read New Moon! :) Like, right now.
Jessica- Sorry, but I definitely consider you one of the "rabids"--and I mean that in the nicest way possible!
And yeah, I know, I need to read ECLIPSE and BREAKING DAWN too-they're both in my TBR stack at least!
LOL, Alyson. Okay, okay. I'll go with that tag. :) I mean, I did just zip over here the second I saw the word "Twilight."
I am keeping low expectations. I already have tickets for Friday night.
I don't know whether I should admit this here..... I haven't yet read the books, so have no expectations about the movie.... not even sure I'll see the movie! (should I be ducking????)
Hey Jessica- Sorry to be the one to "out" you--but it is what it is! :-D
Hey Mari- Low expectations are probably good--it gives you a much better chance of being pleasantly surprised!
Sara- It's perfectly Okay. I promise not to throw popcorn at you!! And just so we're even-- I still haven't seen MAMA MIA yet-- gasp!!
Gaaah! I was seriously going to post about this tomorrow! Great minds must think alike.
I'm going on Friday, though sadly not the midnight showing since I have kids to get up and out to school in the morning. From what I've seen in the trailers, I'm looking forward to it, but I'm going to reserve expectations of being true to the book based on past book-to-movie experiences. I'm sure it will be entertaining, though. But then again, I thought that about Golden Compass...
OK, now I have to go figure out something to post for tomorrow!
Hey Gerb- Sorry I stole your topic! :-(
Book to screen is always a little tricky, it's hard to show all that internal angst and subtext- still I'm really looking forward to it!
I'm probably the only person in the world who didn't really like the book (and I can say that since it's such an uber bestseller that my lone opinion isn't going to hurt it!!!!).
However, I do love teen movies so I'll probably see it at some stage - mind you, goodness knows when it will make it's way to NZ, so it's probably lucky that I'm not a massive fan!!!!
Hey Amanda- Oh, you're not the only one-- I know of a few others! They're just laying low and waiting for all of the hype to die down!
And hey, you may not have Twilight in NZ, but you got Brett & Jermaine from FLIGHT OF THE CONCORDS--what more could you want??
Confession: I, too, am not a big Twilight fan. I read the first one, waiting eagerly to fall in love with Edward, but I guess I went in with unrealistic expectations. Is it wrong to hope the movie redeems the book? Or is it insanity (trying the same thing expecting different results) to hope to fall in love with Edward when I see the movie?
Hey there scoble I/we will be there at blogcamp to hear you.download reaper its Gonna totally rock.
We have to wait until 11th December before Twilight is released here in Australia. I tried to buy advanced tickets for my teen daughters (who are RABID fans) but they weren't on sale yet. Ah well...
Hey Joy- You know sometimes movies DO redeem books. It's rare- but I can think of a few instances where it happens, so maybe it'll happen for you! I mean, the Edward they picked is pretty dreamy - a little pale though . . .
:-D
Hey Dritte-
Excuse me for saying so, but WHATTTT????
Hey Ken- Okay, you definitely win BEST DAD award for trying to scope our early tickets for your daughters!! How cool are you??
Very cool I'm guessing!
Hehe - Alyson - good point! Actually I just bought two copies of the DVD for Christmas presents for some overseas friends!!!!
Hey Amanda-
I can never decide which one I love more-- Brett or Jermaine . . .
Oh, and your book arrived today!!! I had a false alarm the other day when a package arrived and I thought it was yours. . .but today it's here and I can't wait to dig in!!!!
YAY YOU!!
I won't be there on opening night but will definitely see it. I heard the soundtrack already made the tops and the movie's not even out yet. Craaaaaaazy cool.
Wendy- Yup, I heard that too! It's such a an amazing phenom!
i've heard from a VERY reliable source who really did NOT like the books that the movie is "AMAZING." like, epic. and that she'll go see it again. this is really surprising. so... i'm excited. buying tickets now. the midnight show at union square is already sold out!
Hey Melissa-- OOOOOH! Now I really can't wait!
I have seen this movie with my friends in theater. And I like thi movie very much. Mind blowing movie. Actually I like to Watch Movies Online.
