Spring Reading

Snorkeling in Hawaii with my son April 2012
I admit it: I'm on a bit of a John Green kick right now. I might even have an author crush on the poor guy. The last two books I've read are Looking for Alaska, which a dear friend gave me for my birthday, and Fault in Our Stars. Loved them both and now I'm eager to read more of his novels.

I recently had the good fortune of vacationing in Hawaii and The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks is the paperback I kept in my beach bag. I still need to finish it, and I aim to do so soon because the next books on my TBR list is Fated by TFC's Alyson Noel--who, as luck would have it, I get to see when she comes to Salt Lake City, Utah next week as part of her book tour.

If you could bring any (living) author to your neck of the woods for a book tour stop, who would you choose?

Good News Friday...continues!

As Friday leaves down under and enters Northern America, the good news continues!

Thanks to Amanda for the lovely shout out about my newest release! I'm thrilled to announce that my new young adult novel, MY LIFE UNDECIDED releases THIS week! And I'm very proud to be sharing such a kick-arse release week with Amanda Ashby and Alyson Noel (hands down two of the coolest peeps I know!)

Below is a book summary for MY LIFE UNDECIDED and the aforementioned (by Amanda!) "movie-style" book trailer that I produced for it! I hope you all enjoy!

BOOK TRAILER:

BOOK SUMMARY (From the Inside Flap):

PLEASE READ THIS! MY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

Okay, maybe that was a bit melodramatic, but I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit melodramatic at the moment.

Here’s the deal. My name is Brooklyn Pierce, I’m fifteen years old, and I am decisionally challenged. Seriously, I can’t remember the last good decision I made. I can remember plenty of crappy ones though. Including that party I threw when my parents were out of town that accidentally burned down a model home. Yeah, not my finest moment, for sure.

But see, that’s why I started a blog. To enlist readers to make my decisions for me. That’s right. I’m gave up. Threw in the towel. I let someone else be the one to decide which book I read for English. Or whether or not I accepted an invitation to join the debate team from that cute-in-a-dorky-sort-of-way guy who gave me the Heimlich Maneuver in the cafeteria. (Note to self: Chew the melon before swallowing it.) I even let them decide who I dated!

Well, it turns out there are some things in life you simply can’t choose or have chosen for you—like who you fall in love with. And now everything’s more screwed up than ever.

But don’t take my word for it, read the book and decide for yourself. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream in frustration. Or maybe that’s just me. After all, it’s my life.

EARLY REVIEWS:

"Brooklyn is a sympathetic protagonist with whom teens will identify. Her journey is fun to read, and decision-challenged readers will learn an important lesson about self-acceptance along the way."
--School Library Journal

"Brody taps into a universal human desire...An amusing coming-of-age story with many funny moments...[Brooklyn's] flustered, off-the-cuff narration should keep readers as invested in her actions as her blog followers are."
--Publisher's Weekly

Thanks everyone for sharing my Good News Friday!

Good News Friday!

Holy cow, it's been an exciting couple of weeks here at the TFC. Three books have had birthdays: Lauren Baratz-Logsted's The Twin's Daughter, Alyson Noel's Radiance, and Alyson's Noel's Kisses From Hell (anthology.)

And I'm so excited to help Alyson celebrate the HUGE news that Radiance debuted #2 on the New York Times Bestsellers List for Children's Paperbacks. WOW!!! Congratulations, Alyson!

I also found out that my Lifted is in its second printing and it's an ALA/YALSA 2010 Quick Pick for Reluctant Readers nominee. It's in good company, along with Elizabeth Scott's The Unwritten Rule. Click HERE to see the list. Any more good news this week?

Good News Friday!

Hello! For those of you in the U.S., happy 4th of July! As many of you are also doing, I'm off to the wilderness (read: no internet) and since we don't want this news to go unannounced, I'm scheduling this post in advance.
Because it's BIG!
The Immortals series hit #5 on the New York Times Bestsellers List for Children's Series! How wonderful!
AND Dark Flame debuted on USA Today Bestsellers list! Congratulations, Alyson! You can read more about it (as I'm sure there are more exciting updates that I won't get to know about until I return to civilization) on Alyson's blog. Click HERE.

Also (and yes I feel dorky piggybacking onto something as exciting as Alyson's news with my own Good News Friday tidbit), but here goes: Lifted recently received a great review from Publisher's Weekly.

"When high school sophomore Poppy's professor mother relocates them from Boulder, Colo--where Poppy hung out with the tattooed, anti-conformist crown--to Pleasant Acres, Tex., where she's to attend a Baptist high school, Poppy is surprised to find herself taken under the wing of two of the most popular girls in school. Poppy's mother is happy to see her with clean-cut new friends, but polished, polite Whitney and Mary Jane have a secret: they love to shoplift. Soon Poppy is stealing from stores and juggling a couple of romantic interests, including the preacher's son. Toliver (the Romantic Comedies series) adeptly captures Poppy's conflict between wanting to do what's right and the rush she gets from lifting, which is underscored by the tension between her independent streak and her relief and appreciation over finding new friends so easily. Mary Jane's complicated history with another student takes the story to its climax, as Poppy has to decide who her friends are and who she is. Poppy is an appealing, relatable protagonist, though secondary characters can be one dimensional; the ending is pat but satisfying. Ages 14-up. (June)." --Publisher's Weekly
And last but not least, please visit Free Book Friday (founded by own own Jessica Brody) for a chance to win 1 of 3 signed copies of Lifted!

Love The One You're With-?

So this week at the café we’re talking about friends and/or boyfriends—which often times, or at least in my case anyway, becomes the same thing.

I can honestly say, that while the bulk of my romantic relationships didn’t end up going the distance, nearly all of them resulted in some really nice friendships (please note, I wrote nearly—there are definite exceptions to this!).

And yet not one of those relationships started as a friendship. They pretty much followed my usual course of initial spark to burning flame to complete and total burn-out to a friendship that while nice, had no lingering smolder or sizzle (or at least not on my part anyway). Which is funny because I’ve written quite a few books where the couple in question start out as either friends or disliking each other entirely, and even though I love the idea of not realizing that the love you’ve been searching for has been right there in front of you all along, it’s never, not once, happened to me.

Which leads me to wonder—has it happened to you? Or is this just the stuff of books and movies?

Sing it out in the comments!

More Good News For Friday!!

Major Congrats to Sara and Lauren for all their good news!!  And since today's the day for sharing, here's mine:

EVERMORE is at #3 this week on the New York Times Best Sellers List for Children's Paperbacks-making for 17 weeks in the top 4!!! It's also at #92 on the USA Today list, and #2 on the Publisher's Weekly Children's Fiction list!!!

Oh, and the audio version of EVERMORE is now available--you can listen to a sneek peek HERE!

And reviews are coming in for BLUE MOON--(in stores July 7th!!)--getting the 5 Star Gold Award from TeensReadToo who says:

"I really enjoy sequels, but they make me nervous, especially when I loved the first book as much as I did EVERMORE. But Alyson Noel surpassed all my expectations, and not only is BLUE MOON an amazing sequel - it sets the bar for the rest of this series very, very high! When I reached the last page of this one, all I could say was “wow!” . . .There were numerous twists that kept me guessing. Just when I thought I had things figured out, I would get pulled in a new direction, which kept the book fast-paced and full of suspense - I had to keep turning the pages. . .Another highly recommended book from Alyson Noel, I can’t wait to read more about Ever and Damen. THE IMMORTALS series is one you’ll want to get your hands on!" 5 Star Gold Award- TeensReadToo

And 4 Stars from Romantic Times magazine who writes:

“In the second installment of the bestselling and captivating Immortals series, gutsy young heroine Ever is faced with the twin teenage terrors of isolation and alienation. Noel does an excellent job exploring Ever’s growing fears and her determination to save lost love Damen. This author is on a roll!”4 stars Romantic Times

I also have an interview in this month's Romantic Times, but since my scanner is on strike I'll just say that it's about the research I've done for THE IMMORTALS series, and it's on page 71!

And speaking of interviews, I also did one this week for OC Arts & Culture that you can read HERE

And last but not least a reader made an IMMORTALS series forum that you can join HERE, and Free Book Friday is seeking your questions for an upcoming interview I'm doing over there--so anything you want to know about my books, me, or whatever--click HERE and check out the sidebar to see how to submit!

That's it from me--what about you??

Bell Bottom Blues

So this week we’re reminiscing about our school days and after Sara’s great post about uniforms and Amanda’s about books, I was sort of floundering about what I could possibly add to the mix.

My high school years were a dichotomy. Spliced right down the middle with optimism and enthusiasm marking my Freshman and Sophomore years, only to morph into such a tragic state of apathy by my Junior and Senior years I barely graduated. (Yes, sadly, it’s true. Don’t try this at home.)

And I was totally going to write about that when I visited my old yearbooks for inspiration, and came across a subject I could not resist:

High School Hair.

If you’re in high school, there’s a good chance you just shrugged and thought: Whatev!

If you’re out of high school, especially long out of high school like me, you probably cringed.

Because no matter how cool you may have looked back in the day, no matter how many cans of Dippity Do and/or Aquanet it took to achieve the look—the passage of time has a cruel way of dating things. Turning them from totally smokin’ to totally embarrassing (as evidenced by my look below).

For the record, I blame Charlie’s Angels, Farrah Fawcett in particular, and yes, cans and cans of Aquanet.

By sophomore year I had the good sense to morph the Farrah wings into this:

But still, it’s a bit too fluffy for my current straightening iron obsession.

And by senior year, well, there’s no photo to be found.

Not even a blank square where my face should be—a result of the aforementioned apathy.

Which is too bad since I had the most rockin’, New Wave, Semi-Mullet, Do ever!

But now you’ll just have to take my word for it!

So what about YOU? Did you have “high school” hair? Do you still have high school hair? Tell all in the comments below!

PS- I'm giving a little radio interview Friday April 10, at 8:30 PM (eastern) HERE. So feel free to stop by! And signing copies of EVERMORE on Saturday, April 11, from 12:30- 1:00 PM HERE. (note, it's a $10 admission for members, $20 for non-members!), and the following Saturday, April 18, I'll be talking and signing from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM HERE. Hope to see you there!

Win a signed copy of BLUE MOON!

This week at the café we are celebrating promo week—and since I feel like I’ve promo’d the heck out of EVERMORE, I’ll just do a quick recap and then get to the juice!

Ready?

This is EVERMORE:

It was released on February 3rd and is the first book in my new, 5 book, IMMORTALS series. It debuted at #3 on the New York Times Bestseller list, and has spent 5 weeks at #1. It also broke the top 50 on the USA Today list last week, and the dramatic rights have been sold to Spring Creek Productions and Warner Horizon who hope to make it into a TV series. (I am hoping for this as well). Also, I just learned that it will soon become an audio book (yay!), oh, and the foreign rights have been sold to ten territories so far—five of those at auction(!)—and more are in the works!

Needless to say, writing the paragraph above is a dream come true. And since it’s awesome readers like YOU who made it all happen, I’d like to say thank you, in a way that isn’t just a written Thank You.

Which brings me to this:

BLUE MOON, book #2 in the IMMORTALS series, will now be released one month earlier on July 7th instead of August as originally planned (and as stated in the back of EVERMORE).

This is a picture of BLUE MOON:

This is the back cover copy for BLUE MOON:

Alyson’s Noël’s bestselling Immortals series has been hailed as “addictive” “beautiful” “haunting” and “mesmerizing.” In the second installment, Ever has a chance to bring her family back from the dead—but only if she’s willing to sacrifice the guy she loves more than life itself.

Just as Ever is learning everything she can about her new abilities as an immortal, initiated into the dark, seductive world by her beloved Damen, something terrible is happening to him. As Ever’s powers are increasing, Damen’s are fading—stricken by a mysterious illness that threatens his memory, his identity, his life.

Desperate to save him, Ever travels to the mystical dimension of Summerland, uncovering not only the secrets of Damen’s past—the brutal, tortured history he hoped to keep hidden—but also an ancient text revealing the workings of time. With the approaching blue moon heralding her only window for travel, Ever is forced to decide between turning back the clock and saving her family from the accident that claimed them—or staying in the present and saving Damen, who grows weaker each day...

This is the part where two people win a signed copy of BLUE MOON!

All you have to do is leave a comment by Midnight, Sunday, April 5, California time, and I will utilize the old name in a hat trick to pick two winners.

This is the small print:

Since my author copies have a history of arriving well past the release date, I am going to pre-order two copies on line so I can make the best effort possible to give the winners a shot at having one of the first, hot off the press, copies. Hopefully, this will work!

Thank you so much for your all of your enthusiasm and support, I couldn’t have done it without YOU!

Mean Girls

I’m not sure if I ever wrote about it here before, but for years I didn’t mention the fact that, as a kid, I had been bullied.

And I’m not talking about a single confrontation between me and some mean kid that took place after school, no, I mean an ongoing, ridiculously prolonged, form of bullying between me and a group of older girls (two in particular) that took place before, during, and after school, and that lasted five years.

One of the reasons I didn’t talk about it is because I didn’t understand it. I’d done nothing I could think of to instigate their behavior except move to a new town, and arrive at my new school with a major stomachache and a bad case of nerves. But by lunchtime that very first day, word was out, and my new nickname of “Stuck Up B*&%h” somehow stuck. There was even a song created to go with it, one that made liberal use of my nickname, over and over again.

But despite the lyrics professing that I thought I was “sooo bitchen” I’m here to say I pretty much felt I was anything but. I may have lived in the biggest house on the street, but trust me, it was by no means happy inside. My parents were constantly fighting, on the verge of divorce, and my entire world was falling apart, making it hard to determine which was more miserable, being at home or going to school.

One of the other reasons I never talked about it is because I was ashamed. When a group of kids decide to outright reject you, without talking to you or getting to know you first, but merely deciding to hate you at first sight, it does more than just hurt, it makes you question your entire being, your self-worth. Besides, back then, bulling was relegated to something boys did. No one ever spoke about the propensity of meanness in girls. And believe me, there was nothing covert about what they did, it was right out there in the open, available for teachers and parents to see, but not once did anyone ever step in to stop it.

And though the taunting eventually stopped, the effects lingered for a very long time. And it wasn’t until a few years ago, when I read Rachel Simmons incredible book, ODD GIRL OUT that I could finally define what’d happened to me. It’s hard to describe the emotions I went through when reading the book, but it was definitely a cathartic experience. Just knowing that I wasn’t alone, that others had experienced the same type of thing, provided tremendous relief.

Not long after reading it, I wrote ART GEEKS AND PROM QUEENS, my book about bullying, conformity, and the insidious meanness of girls. And I thought I was done with the topic, having fully moved on, when the strangest thing happened just a few days ago.

One of my bullies sent me an e-mail.

She’d found me on a social networking site and contacted me. Telling me how horrible she’d felt all of these years, and how she’d never tolerate that sort of behavior in her own kids. And even though it would seem like I should be well past caring either way, I could hardly believe my eyes when I read it. That e-mail meant a great deal to me, much more than I was probably able to express in my reply.

So I guess these are my tips for Surviving Adolescence week here at The Cafe:

If you’re being bullied- speak up! Don’t suffer in silence; tell someone who can help you! And definitely get yourself a copy of ODD GIRL OUT.

If you ARE the bully- then STOP IT! Just STOP IT! Treating others poorly is one of the worst things you can do, and it is NEVER okay. The cheapest way to feel good about yourself is by bashing someone else. Find a better way to boost your own self-esteem.

Oh, and no matter how many decades have passed, a heartfelt apology goes a very long way.

And the winner is . . .

While I truly wish you could all win signed copies of EVERMORE, alas, there are only two in this particular giveaway. So after dropping all of the names into a Sex Pistols baseball cap (a Rock n- Read freebie!), I had my husband close his eyes, reach in, and pick two names . . . .

And the winners are . . . .

Wait for it . . .

Paradox & Rimasbookjournal

So, if you are either one of those people, please e-mail me at: alyson@alysonnoel.com and tell me where to send your signed copy (and who to make it out to!). And please note, these are coming straight from my box of author copies, which, usually arrive early-- usually being the key word here as the CRUEL SUMMER box arrived seriously late.

Anyway, congrats to Paradox & Rima-- and thanks to all the rest of you who entered!!!

Have a good day everyone!

The Immortals Series

It's promo week at the cafe and I almost missed my turn as I was in Las Vegas celebrating my b-day with my amazing husband-- Thanks babe you ROCK!!

And even though a b-day celebration is a sort of promo of sorts (I mean all that cake and champagne was kind of like a promo of moi) luckily, I made it back just in time to promote my new book.

Or rather, my new series of books.

Or even more specifically the first two books in my new series of books, EVERMORE (o2.03.09) and BLUE MOON (08.04.09)

Now, if  you've been to the cafe before, then you've probably already heard me mention my new IMMORTALS series, at least once.

Maybe twice.

But definitely no more than thrice.

Okay, probably more than thrice, but I digress.

Anyway, I'm very excited about this new series, partly because I'm the excitable type, and partly because it's been really fun to write, the research has been awesome, and it's a bit of a departure in that it's a paranormal about a psychic girl and a very mysterious boy--and yet not a HUGE departure in that the girl is 16 and lives in Laguna Beach.

Also, during the writing of these books some very cool things have happened, EVERMORE received the 5 STAR GOLD AWARD from TeensReadToo, the first two books sold at auction in Germany, EVERMORE sold to Spain as one of their lead fall titles, and I've sold three more books in the series to St. Martin's Press (to be published in 2010)- making for a total of five! Oh, and early reader feedback has been great (and very much appreciated!)!

And since it constitutes a whole new addition to the Alyson Noel ouevre I asked the amazing Maddee over at Xuni do a little website makeover to include the new series and I think she did an amazing job!

So, in honor of all of my excitement, and in honor of YOU for reading this far, I'm giving away 2 signed copies (I'm talking hot off the press author copies!) of EVERMORE to two randomly selected commenters who visit my website, clicks on the EVERMORE cover, enters the portal, goes to the "Extras" page, picks a song from the playlist, then comes back here and posts the song in the comments section. (Not as involved as it sounds-- I promise!)

And all you have to do to start the journey toward winning is click HERE.

The small print starts here:  Contest closes at midnight, Laguna Beach time. Two winners will be chosen at random, and announced on Monday, December 8. Author copies usually arrive before the books hit the shelves (scheduled bookstore drop is on Feb 3, 2009) but please keep in mind that my CRUEL SUMMER copies didn't find their way to my doorstep until very late, and as these things are out of my hands, your patience is very much appreciated.

Oh, and speaking of . . .CRUEL SUMMER was nominated for the Best Books of 2008!!!

Twilight, anyone??

Since it’s anything goes week here at the café, I thought I’d write about a little phenomenon you might have heard of called TWILIGHT (the movie). And while I won’t get into a Team Edward vs. Team Jacob debate—I think we’ve all had enough of divisive politics for a while—I do want to talk about the amazing fact that according to Fandango, over 100 show times are already sold out across the nation—and we’re still a week away from the premiere!

And while I haven’t read past NEW MOON (yet!), I’m definitely planning to see the movie—at midnight—on Thursday—and yes, I preordered my tickets from Fandango too—or rather Jessica Brody pre-ordered them as she’s far more organized and industrious than me—but I digress!

And in case you were wondering (you probably weren't, but still) I don’t consider myself a rabid fan. I mean, I really really liked the book, and by the end I was even more than a little annoyed with my husband for not being a vampire like Edward—because how cool would that be? But still, I’m not as obsessed as some people I know (you know who you are!). So I guess that’s why I don’t have these huge expectations other than to be entertained.

Oh, and for Edward to be insanely hot!

But really, that’s it. And with Catherine Hardwicke at the helm, I’m pretty confident I’ll get what I want. But other than that, I honestly don’t care if it’s not just like the book, or if they take major liberties, or leave stuff out, or whatever. I’m just there for the camaraderie, the popcorn, and the good time.

Okay, and maybe I'm hoping for lots of Edward close ups--but that's it-- I swear!

What about you? Do you have major expectations? Will you be disappointed if it’s not true to the book?

Alyson Noel, is the award winning author of seven novels. EVERMORE, the first book in her upcoming IMMORTALS series will be in store on 02.03.09, BLUE MOON will follow in Fall 09, with three more titles in 2010. You can visit her at: www.alysonnoel.com

Heard It Through The Grapevine

This week's topic is CURRENT EVENTS, and I have to admit I’m at a bit of a loss. I mean, I suppose I could write about:

1. THE SUPERBOWL—that’s that show about football, right?

2. POLITICS—Super Tuesday, anyone? But since I’m married to a political ANIMAL, I’ll have plenty of that tomorrow so I won’t bore you with it here.

3. There’s always the latest CELEBRITY DISH—someone entered rehab, someone’s having twins, someone is so exhausted it required hospitalization . . .(Apparently working for several months—in a row—can do this to a person. Who knew?)

4. The latest OPRAH BOOK CLUB pick—I downloaded A NEW EARTH onto my iPod a year ago—if you’re into that kind of thing, it’s amazing! If not, proceed to number five.

5. My NETI POT obsession—if you’re at all squeamish, easily frightened, susceptible to new ideas, have a heart condition, low blood pressure, are under 3’ 8”—then please, ask your doctor before clicking.

6. NEW YORK FASHION WEEK- hint- black is the new black.

But the truth is, I’m under a major DEADLINE (a.k.a.—the most overused though completely valid excuse in any writer's repertoire), which means I’m really not up on any of these things. Though if I were, rest assured, THESE are the subjects I’d be writing about!

What about YOU? What current event has grabbed your attention??

Promo Week!

Well it's promo week here at the Teen Fiction Cafe, and what better way to kick off the New Year than to win a free book??

This time around, I'm giving away a copy of FIRST KISS (THEN TELL), a compilation of the all too true stories of twenty-some YA authors (including yours truly!) writing about their first kiss experiences.

Now I admit, when I was first approached to do this, the second after I said YES! I panicked.

Seriously panicked.

Thinking—no way can I tell that story!

I mean, I'd successfully banished it from my memory bank, blocked it out for a reason. But, as they say, truth really is stranger than fiction--or in my case more humbling, more desperate, more overall embarrassing!

So if you're up for reading all the cringe worthy details... all you have to do is leave a comment telling me where you were (basement, golf course, Dumbo ride at Disneyland?) when the big moment occurred. . . and one of you will receive your very own autographed copy!

(Small Print= comment deadline is Midnight Jan. 5).

Also, in the spirit of self promotion, my next book, CRUEL SUMMER, will be in stores this May, and I can hardly wait! The cover is awesome, but since there are still a few minor tweaks to be done I'll wait to post it. But I will say that it's the story of OC native, Colby, a high school junior, poised for the best summer of her life, when her parents decide to get divorced and pack her off to live on a tiny Greek island with her aunt. And even though she definitely does not want to go, she ends up experiencing a summer she'll never forget . . .

Also, I'm thrilled to say that SAVING ZOE was awarded the TeensReadToo 5 star/Gold Award, was chosen as one of TeenReads "Best Books of 2007" and was recently mentioned on the CBS "Early Show" as one of three books to buy for teens! As this book was born out of a period of intense grief, I'm over the moon thrilled, and just wanted to thank all of you who supported it!

And sometime over the next few weeks (sorry, I don't have an exact date) my interview with ETAccess will air. You can check it out HERE.

So don't forget to leave me a comment, letting me know exactly where you were the first time you found yourself lip-locked! And for those of you who haven't experienced this yet-- tell me where you wish for this moment to take place!!

Happy New Year everyone!
Alyson

Tell Me 'Bout It

Following in the footsteps of my fellow Teen Fiction Café patron, Amanda Ashby, here’s the thing about me and current events- I’m not really all that up on them. Oh sure I saw a brief clip of Britney lip synching in a black bikini, heard something about OJ getting cuffed, did a little happy dance when Ricky Gervais (genius creator of my fave TV show “The Office”) won an Emmy for the equally brilliant “Extras” (even though I didn’t actually watch the Emmys), but for the most part, well, I’m working. And when I’m working, the only current events are my own.

Like Saturday, when I helped my husband load a refrigerator onto a rented truck, only to sit in traffic forever (welcome to California!), so I could get home, do a quick change, and follow my BFF to four different parties (just another Saturday night for her- totally exhausting for me), making for a bleary eyed Sunday morning when we had to wrangle said fridge out of the truck and into the house.

Oh yeah, and last week I went here---

Donated Saving Zoë to the local library in memory of a dear friend (as I do with all of my books)

And had an overall, amazing time!

But now I hear that Michael Douglas learned how to operate a backhoe and spent time at Costco (a first for him!) while researching his latest movie role- and apparently he is now a big fan of both earth shoveling and big box shopping!

Oh, I can feel the lure of celebrity news pulling me in!

What about you- how do you keep up with current events (or celebrity scandal masquerading as current events!) -?
