Vacationing at Home

My daughter's been on vacation for nearly two weeks now. It would be nice to go away but we did a fairly big trip in December and my mom's current situation is one that makes being away at this time a less than great idea. So what have we been occupying ourselves with during our at-home vacation?

The usual stuff. Having friends over, going to friends' houses. Wii tournaments (I love Swordplay Showdown from Sports Resorts - I'm on the 13th level! The game gave me a medal!). Catching up on our pizza inhalation - my daughter has discovered shrimp and I have discovered shrimp pizza. Writing - Jackie is 14,000 words into the first book of a projected series - have I mentioned lately that she's 10???

Earlier this week, though, we got to do one of my favorite at-home vacation activities of all time. We...

...went to the movies.

Yes, yes, I know, people go to the movies all the time. But I never see anyone else go to the movies like we do. None of the other schools in the area are off right now so the theatres are pretty empty. Plus, we go during an off-peak time - in this case, first show of the day. Since almost no one else is there - only four other people were scattered throughout the theatre on Tuesday morning - we take over three seats per person in the back row. We put all the armrests up and then stretch out on our sides across all those seats, head to head. It's insanely comfortable and fun.

Yes, we are simple people. But if you've never watched a movie like that before, you should try it some time.

Oh, what movie did we see? you ask. "The Bounty Hunter." If you love Jennifer Aniston like I do - yea, Team Jennifer! - then that's reason enough to go. But other than that...

QUESTION OF THE DAY: IF YOU'RE VACATIONING AT HOME, WHAT'S YOUR VERSION OF LYING DOWN IN A PUBLIC THEATRE TO WATCH THE SHOW - I.E. FUN THING TO DO THAT YOU CONSIDER UNIQUELY YOURS?

OK, I need to get out of here and go play some Wii. I want to get to the 14th level today.

Be well. Don't forget to write.

My mom's on spring vacation & she came to visit us so I've been doing some fun things from home, too. Like shopping, going to movies, having a little writing time. We saw the Bounty Hunter (Mom and me) and thought it was fun. We rented the Princess and the Frog and watched with the boys. It was cute but there was a HUGE plot flaw and I'm wondering if anyone else caught it? And lastly, my husband and I saw Shutter Island last night on a date. Wow. Weird, and def. not for the faint of heart. Congrat's to Jackie! I wish I were 14,000 words into my latest book!

I only get three day's vacation from school this year, my school district had 4 snow days so April 1st-the 4th is all the vacation time I get and its going to be pretty sucky, my boyfriend will be busy working, I have to help my parent's move furniture next Friday, and won't have any time to write except Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, mom is using new t shirts and a trip to Borders as my carrot to make me help her and dad next Friday, summer vacation is the time I really look forward to a long vacation and plenty of writing time. Currenly 3 thousand something words into a new novel while trying to do a research paper for AP Eng

Your idea is very appealing to me too! :)

Kate, that's fabulous about the 3000 words - it may not seem like it now but summer will be here before you know it!

Bookaholic, if you try it let me know how you like it!

Today is the first day of spring vacation for us and since daughter #1 spends half her school day at the zoo (she's studying stats and zoology and researching gorilla arthritis) and doesn't get a break from that this week, we're staying home.

Funny, last year we went to SC and daughter #2 complained about us being gone while all her friends were here. This year she's already bored because "everyone's gone!"

What will be do this week?

Theme marathon movie nights.

Curses, Uno and Apples to Apples tournaments.

Read-ins - comfy clothes, cushions, pillows, blankets, plenty of snacks and piles of books!

Sleep in till noon.

Revisions! Well, okay, that part's only me, which I hope to accomplish while everyone else is sleeping in!

Hooray for Jackie and her book progress!

I love stay-cations!

I love a staycation too! My favorite thing is reading, reading, reading all day long. I always feel behind on my bookshelf, so if I can finish a book in a day, I'm soooo happy and blissful.

Shelli and Melissa, I love you guys but...noooooooooooo! I was trying to avoid the "staycation" word!

Melissa Walker said...

You did a good job avoiding it, but it had to be said, Lauren.

At least we didn't say "Glamping" (Glamorous Camping... eek).

"Glamping"? That's a new one on me! And no, you won't catch me using that word either, even though I just did.
