Turning the tables

This week we're talking about suriviving adolescence...... so I decided to turn the tables slightly and talk about how as a parent I'm surviving my kids adolescence!

If you think it's tough going through the teens years, then take it from me it's no picnic going through it again with your kids. In fact I have only one piece advice to all parents: remember you were young once.

And as I frequently tell my kids: there's nothing you're doing that I haven't already done - so don't bother trying to fob me off with untruths!!!

Having said that, it's still hard to watch them make the same mistakes, although at least they do confide in me in a way I never would have with my parents.

Their father doesn't see it like I do, and is continually saying things like: 'it wasn't like that in my day'....... maybe that's why I write young adult fiction and he doesn't!!!

It was bad enough going through it once- I can't imagine doing it twice like parents have to do! How great though that your kids feel comfortable enough to confide in you though, besides, think of all the "research" they provide!

My girl's only eight, so I still have a few years to go...but I'm sure I'll enjoy it!

Don't tell my daughter, but the drama can actually be amusing...

Yes, Alyson, I do realise how lucky I am that they tell me things.... though it's been suggested by my daughter that perhaps my son tells me too much!!

Lauren, it can be enjoyable... and at other times it's like OMG!!

Yes, Gerb, I agree! And I don't let on to my kids either.

I haven't had to do it yet, but I'm expecting lots of drama because I've got two girls.

Lalalala - that is the sound of me not listening to you because I refuse to believe that my children will even consider doing anything that I did. In fact the thought makes me shudder!

Though my kids are still pretty young and happen to be of the male variety, they still have their drama moments. And like Gerb, I find it amusing. When I'm in a good mood, that is!

I'm going to use the phrase "don't try to fob me off!" very soon. Love it!

I'm hoping that when I have kids one day, they'll be full of story ideas.
