Boy Friends

When my husband and I were first married 13 years ago, we had no magnets on our fridge. So I went magnet shopping, and picked out one that read: Happiness is being married to your best friend. Matt is most definitely my best friend. But I'm not so sure it started out that way.

When I first met him (at the ripe ol' age of 18) our freshman year in college, I knew I liked him. In fact, I think I was so attracted to him I kind of skipped the "beoming friends" part. Then he admitted that he'd never had a girlfriend, just friends who were girls. It was all a bit unconventional, and we had to make our own rules, but as you can tell, everything worked out just fine.

What about you? Did you ever date a friend or have a FWB? How'd it work out? Or did you ever get involved with someone without having been friends first?

You guys are adorable together!!

When I met my husband it was kind of like you-- I knew in that moment that he was The One. So while we didn't start out as friends, he's definitely my best friend now--we do EVERYTHING together, it's kind of nauseating really . . .

I second what Alyson said about the photo of you and your hubby - so gorgeous!!!!!

My husband and I became serious really quickly so it wasn't until later that we became friends as well and what I like best about it is that at the time I didn't know I wanted to be a writer and he didn't really know how serious he was about his music so we sort of both grew into it together.

I love this pic, Wendy! :) Never dated a friend, but I'm beginning to think that's the way to go!

I second what Alyson said; you guys are an adorable couple!

I never could do the FWB thing. Once the benefits kick in, the dynamics of the friendship changes.

My DH and I also got serious quickly, but we were friends by the time we got married - the romance just came first.

Five years ago I walked into a restaurant and saw a cute boy. I turned to my friend and said, "I'm going to get the guy in the blue sweater." I left with his telephone number and we haven't been apart for more than a week since. But the dating definitely came before the friendship. It's like I woke up one day and realized that he had suddenly become my best friend. Funny how those things work.

My junior high crush introduced me to my husband, who roomed with him in college. My husband and old crush have been close friends for almost 15 years and have been in each other's weddings.

I was waiting tables and bartending at a restaurant when the new chef's assistant burned my best customer's steak to shoe leather. I THREW said steak through the kitchen pass through, yelling, "Does this look mid-rare to you?" and chef and I have been together ever since. At some point, we went from steak enemies to friends.

Fascinating! So it looks like most of us (so far) jumped into the romance ring first and then became friends with our significant others.

Love hearing about those "aha" moments, like Cassidy's "I'm gonna get him," Taylor's trading in her crush for her jr. high crush's roomie, and Erica's steak affair.

Cute photo!

I've only been able to date guys who were by best pals first. :) :)
